800xA is part of ABB's Industrial IT family of products. It is a control system organized for observing, controlling, troubleshooting and optimizing any process and asset management, and it is designed to run in the Microsoft Windows environment. It aims to raise operator productivity and plant reliability in the process industry.

The human-system interface

The layer where the operator meets the system is the most visible part of 800xA. The following components work together in a single environment:

  • Workplace: the interface from which the operator reaches screens, alarms and trends in a single working environment.
  • Process Graphics: graphic screens that show the process.
  • Alarm Manager: listing, acknowledging and managing alarms and events.
  • Trends: how measurements change over time.
  • Historian: storing and querying historical data.
  • Controller Integration: connecting controllers to the system and presenting their data in the shared environment.

Interoperability built on standards

800xA is built on common standards such as the Microsoft Windows environment, web-browser technology, ActiveX controls and OPC (OLE for Process Control). This makes it easier to connect the system to third-party applications, reporting tools and other automation systems; on the OPC side our OPC technologies service comes into play.

Information integration

  • Working through a single unified window.
  • Access from PLCs to process data from a single point.
  • The ability to integrate with enterprise systems (ERP and others).

Other platforms and choosing

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose between 800xA and Freelance?

The choice depends on the size of the process, integration needs, existing ABB systems and the habits of the operating team. We collected the criteria in our platform selection article; a short consulting conversation can also make the decision easier.

I have an Advant system; do I have to move to 800xA?

It is not mandatory, but as spare-part and support risk grows, planning the move makes sense. With a phased roadmap it can be done without stopping production.

Can I get remote support for my 800xA system?

Yes. Under service agreements we provide 24/7 remote access and phone support, with on-site service when needed.
